Continuity

"The problem with quotes on the Internet is that no one can confirm their authenticity." — Abraham Lincoln

If there is one thing that is true about that statement is the fact there is "continuity" of these quotes on social media. We read them and say, "That sure is the truth." Then we look at the author of the quote and we can only shake our heads and laugh.

There is a continuity, as well, to how people might respond by quotes given to the Bible. We can fall for the speaker's adamant declaration that a quote is true, only to be found to be incorrect. However, is that what we want from continuity? Do we always want to "fact-check" quotes? Can't people just speak the truth?

Let's face it, religion has been guilty of making adamant quotes as to what "God" says. And while that is a consistent problem with religions, it is also creates a culture of divisiveness because one religion knows better what the Divine says and thinks than others. The result is that we try to "just get along" with the simple statement, "God is one and all religions lead to God." And the continuity in response to that statement? All religions will say their path to God is better!

We are starting a study of the book, God is Not One, by sociologist Stephen Prothero, in our "Aging with Attitude" group. While it meets on Wednesdays at 11:30 AM, I am willing to have another study of this book at another time. Let me know if that is something that would be of interest to you. It is important, however, that you have the book to be able to discuss its impact on the religions of the world.

I believe this book, plus our sermon this Sunday, will help us to be more focused on the "continuity" of the God we worship, the Bible we quote, the life we live as followers of Jesus Christ. If the Christian faith would be more focused on these aspects instead of each "branch" trying to cut down the other branches, people would not look at us as the image of an "incorrect quote" as whom God claims to be.
