Holy Conjunctions and Holy Compounds

We have been talking about the use of Holy Conjunctions in our sermon series, "Jesus, January, and Jazz." We have identified that conjunction as "and." We can look back at the failures of the past, and still look hopefully to the possibilities of the future — as individuals and a community of faith.

This Sunday we will be talking about "Holy Compounds." The one in particular we will look at is found in Psalm 36 when we read:

5 Your steadfastlove, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.

7 How precious is your steadfastlove, O God! All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. 9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. (Psalm 36:5-9).

10 O continue your steadfastlove to those who know you, and your salvation to the upright of heart!

And yes, we could say that this should be separated according to good grammatical habits, it is the recognition we have through the New Revised Standard Version of Psalm 36 that brings us this compound word. The psalmist recognizes that God never intended for love to be off again...on again, but rather, steadfast.

Join us this Sunday as we continue our series, "Jesus, January, and Jazz." The music this week will reflect some of the African-American influence to jazz music as we recognize MLK Day on January 21st.
