Love is not a Fashion Accessory

When was the last time you looked at all your clothes in your closet or your drawers and wondered why you have so many clothes? Do you find a shirt, pants, blouse, dress, or coat that you can't remember the last time you wore it? And when you can't remember when you last wore said clothing did you try to reason to yourself why you should keep said item? Yeah, me, too.

It has been reported that we have a clothing problem in the United States. However, it is not about an outdated shirt or tie or dress that you hope will come back into fashion, but it is about what we do with the clothes we no longer wear.

According to Trey Granger ("Recycling Mystery: Clothing," earth911.com, August 8, 2018.), the EPA reports that over 16 million tons of clothing and textiles end up in landfills every year, comprising over 5 percent of total space. By comparison, we recycle only 2.6 million tons. The most common solution lies in the middle: donating your unwanted clothing for reuse. ..."

When many of us decide at some point that we can finally let go of our bell-bottom pants or wide ties or clothes less "ancient,"we donate them to a non-profit for reuse to such places like Goodwill.

So why do we have all these clothes filling our landfills? Because consumers assume their unwanted clothes aren't usable and simply throw them away...16 million tons!

I know for many people it is important to be "fashionable." I want to be "in style." It only takes my two adult daughters some clothes and they will quickly say, "Oh no, not that!" to know that I am not a fashionista!

In our text this Sunday, Colossians 3:1-11, we will be investigating what is a "sustainable fashion" in our world today. What kind of clothes does a person of faith need to be living out a life in the name of Jesus? But these clothes are not what we wear, but what is in our heart, mind, and soul.
