Miracles and Wonders

Last Sunday afternoon I watched my DVD of Paul Simon's live Graceland concert. It was filmed live in Zimbabwe in 1987 and featured Simon, trumpeter Hugh Masekela, the one and only Miriam Makeba, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I watch this video at least once a year because I love the music and the exuberance of the musicians and singers. The intermittent shots of the beauty of South Africa are stunning. This video was done before South Africa was free, while Nelson Mandela was still imprisoned, and Winnie Mandela was still a national hero.

One lyric particularly stood out to me from one of the cuts: "These are the days of miracles and wonders." I believe these, too, are the days of miracles and wonders. The miracles and wonders may be hard to see, to identify. I believe they are there. It only requires us to stop, breathe, look, listen. God is in us and among us and as long as that remains true the days of miracles and wonders are not over!

These are days of miracles and wonders as our church looks to her future. What is ahead for us? What is God calling us to do, to be? How will we be responsive to that call? What does the future of Spring Creek look like? Are we being called to something new, never considered before? Maybe we need to have some conversations about these questions. Please, just remember, these are days of miracles and wonders!

Bible text to contemplate this week is 1st Corinthians 12: 12-27.

Laity Sunday October 18

October 18th has been designated by the national UCC as a Laity Sunday. This is an opportunity to highlight and recognize the faithful people in the pews who bring so much to this family of faith. We look forward to hearing from our friends as they share their faith and love for this congregation. Colleen McDonald has organized and led this effort.

All Saint's Day November 1

The first Sunday in November, this year on All Saints Day, we pause and remember those of our members and friends who have passed on to the other side of eternity. The names of those submitted to the church office will be remembered in the November first service.

Please send the names of your loved ones and their relationship to you to the church office by noon, Wednesday, October 28th. May God bless them with his eternal presence and comfort us in our sorrow.

Pastor Joanne invites you to join us this and every Sunday morning for our live-streamed Facebook worship service at 10:30 am, preceded by 5 minutes of music for meditation to help folks get settled. Pajama attire and pets are welcome.

The Spring Creek Sanctuary is cautiously reopening to our members and friends who want to be a part of the worship service in-person. For safety, we are limiting the number that may be present at any one time; attendance is on a first come basis and we encourage calling Pastor Joanne in advance to let her know your intention to attend. Seating is assigned to designated areas maintaining safe distancing. Masks must always be worn. Worshipers should plan to be seated by 10:25, the time we begin filming the live service broadcast. Copies of our Order of Worship are available on the stand by the sanctuary double doors. Pastor Joanne has more information.

God Is Still Speaking,

Let's listen together.
